Hey everyone. This is an expensive time of year, of course, with Christmas, the holidays, lots of additional travel and activities and all that. I just wanted to put this out there and just say that if you are feeling as though you are maybe not going to be able to make your mortgage payment in full coming up, then make sure you talk to your lender. Life events happen all throughout the year, and at times you may find yourself a little short at the end of the month and unable to make that payment. Of course, if you aren’t able to make your payments for three to six months in a row or so, then your lender may actually begin the foreclosure process on you.
Every month, we work with several homeowners who are in this exact situation where they are very close to losing their house. In some cases, some home homeowners have actually nearly given up. They don’t know what to do, they don’t have the money to reinstate, which could be in the tens of thousands of dollars, or even more than $100,000, or more than that. It can become overwhelming because after a certain point, if you miss several payments in a row, then your bank is going to require you pay all that in full in order to reinstate the loan.
If you feel as though that you’re just going to be a little short at the end of the month, and it doesn’t matter if it’s around December or anytime throughout the year, then just have that conversation with your lender because they may actually be able to work with you and figure out a plan for you to actually stay current on your mortgage and in good standing. If you find yourself that you’re a couple months behind, even more so, get on the phone and talk to them, because you certainly want to take advantage of any programs or support that they have to help you through any difficult time.
Certainly no one… And I feel so bad if anyone ever has to lose their house because of foreclosure. Certainly there’s so many life events that can come up, medical expenses, loss of job, whatever. Things happen. The other options, if the mortgage is just too much, you can always list your property for sale and just try to sell it, and then you just can get that mortgage off your plate.
